First Church Joins Odyssey Networks’ Annual “A Million Minutes for Peace” Campaign |
|
|
|
|
If one prayer is powerful, imagine the power of a million offered by people around the world, for one single cause, on one special day. This is the idea behind Odyssey Networks’ annual campaign “A Million Minutes for Peace.”
Launched last year in partnership with over 200 organizations, the campaign invites people of faith and spirit to visit www.AMillionMinutesforPeace.org and fill out a simple “pledge” promising to pause for one minute at noon on the United Nations International Day of Peace (September 21) and pray in their own way for both world peace and the inner peace that creates harmony. Pledges may be made individually or in “block” form on behalf of a congregation, school or group. A list of the pledgers will be presented to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, following his ringing of the Peace Bell at the official observance of the International Day of Peace.
In addition to the peace pledge the Million Minutes for Peace website offers a unique video prayer wall, containing peace prayers by people from diverse faith groups and many walks of life. Visitors can upload their own video prayers for possible inclusion on the wall. Resources for promoting peace and living peacefully are also included, along with original videos of peacemakers at work in the world and a daily blog called “The Power of One” that deals with individual stories of actions that are changing the world little by little. Odyssey is supporting the campaign with bi-lingual (English and Spanish) online advertising, social media, viral marketing with the co-operation of a multitude of partners and faith groups, public relations, and an award-winning public service announcement that will appear on national television and radio. Last year’s inaugural effort brought thousands of pledges from over 114 countries worldwide.
An international peace movement built on the power of prayer has been put into motion. If you are interested in being a part of it, please visit www.amillionminutesforpeace.org. and make the pledge. As part of our service on September 19th, there will be a special Peace Meditation and Centering. |

Three New Orleans churches and a Gulfport, Miss., congregation struggle to regain members five years after Katrina / By Donald E. Skinner
“Increasingly when I go out of town, including to General Assembly, I find UUs very surprised to learn our congregations haven’t been completely rebuilt,” said Morel-Ensminger. “I have to keep telling our story.”

JOIN THE CHOIR! I thought I would share with you some of the reasons I regularly hear about why more folks don’t join the choir:
- I can’t sing. Yes, you can. You probably just had a bad music teacher somewhere in your past! Let us help you rediscover your talent.
- I can’t read music. You don’t need to; you can learn it by ear. Besides, we will teach you to read music if you like! It’s not hard.
- You might make me sing something alone when I don’t want to. Would I do that? I am the lowest-stress music director in the world. I promise you will never be out of your comfort zone.
- Church music is too serious. Hey! This is New Orleans! We’re all about enjoying the music and having fun. As a friend said to me once, “If we ain’t happy, ain’t nothing happening!”
- I’ll do it later. Look, I’ll be frank. We need you now. Our basses and tenors (or rather, our bass and tenor) would especially love a little company and support! Be kind to Gerry and Byron. To quote another friend, “We could do it without you, but it’s so much better with you.”
So! Contact me or you can just show up in the church sanctuary on Thursdays at 7:15 pm and/or 9:30 am on Sunday mornings. (Which reminds me of one more excuse, I mean reason, why folks don’t join: I can’t come on Thursdays. No problem, just come on Sundays!) See you there!
